Last year, Miami graduated 14 seniors, leaving the team unsure of how this last season would be. We knew how important it would be to recruit new members and quickly teach people about three-eventing. We had five returning girls and within the first two weeks of the semester, lost 1 of our two jumpers to an injury. But even though we were unsure of how our semester started we worked so hard and got 15 incredibly driven new members. We wanted to focus on taking it one tournament at a time, having PB after PB at every tournament (and 15 PB’s at nationals!). When we made it to nationals, it was such an incredible accomplishment for our team. Every single returner and new member put in so much work to contribute, making sure new members were getting the opportunities to practice during the week with lots of help from Libby and Ron. It was truly all about putting a score on the board and having a full team. 11 out of the 19 skiers that went to Nationals had never skied on A team before and 8 of them had joined the team in the fall. I am so extremely proud of every ones hard work and dedication to truly taking a rebuilding year and seeing our hard work still pay off with the ability to go to Nationals.
maggiepepsParticipantEmilee Peterson (Double E) – Miami University
Emilee is a freshman this year at Miami and she was a secret weapon for us. Emilee is from Texas and had three-evented a little bit growing up, but had taken a few years off. Battling a very busy first semester of classes and some minor knee pain, she was still able to get back into the swing of skiing, even with little opportunity to practice. Emilee tied for 4th in trick at nationals, brushing off the dust of some toe tricks! Emilee also jumped and slalomed at nationals this year. After her break from skiing, we are so excited to watch her continue to improve and be a triple threat for our team!

maggiepepsParticipantJared Lutz – Miami Waterski
Jared Lutz has been a leader of the Miami University Water Ski Team since he arrived on campus freshman year. Jared’s previous involvement with the water ski community as well as his incredible talent has been integral to the team’s success both personally on the water and also with his coaching ability. Jared has served as both Captain and President of Miami’s team as well as serving in positions at a regional and national level. He has been around the sport since his early childhood and loves to share his knowledge with skiers around him. In Jared’s last season, he got first place at the Great Lakes Conference and second place at both Regionals and Nationals in slalom, closing out his collegiate career. What I think makes Jared such an outstanding senior is his love for the sport and his teammates. We can all see that Jared is an incredible skier, but the tremendous amounts of effort he put into his roles as captain and president of Miami’s team shows his love. This past year, Jared understood how important recruitment was to our team after graduating such a strong senior class. With his leadership we brought in 17 active new members. He always knew how to handle any situation thrown at him and was extremely supportive of skiers. He is passionate, supportive, and intelligent. He always makes sure that he, and the rest of his teammates, are prepared to give their best performance at any competition. His hard work and dedication have helped to deliver us to two consecutive National Championships during his tenure, and we could not be more grateful.
