Which freshman made the biggest impact on their team this year in the MCWSA? Maybe they put up big scores, or brought in some new talent!

Be sure to tell us why you think your nomination should be selected!

    Summer Hartzler
She joined our team after transferring to KU and she has been a great addition to the team! Summer is the sweetest, most caring person i have EVER met. She helped out with all things spirit for all of the tournaments by painting everyone which allowed her to integrate herself with our team culture. Plus she killed it on the water for her first college season! She improved in every event at almost every tournament!

Ella McCrumb- Ella was the only freshman girl to join MSU this season. There was a need for A team women’s skiers, and she jumped right in, willing to try anything! She’s been casually water skiing since she was a kid, but three-event skiing was new to her. She loves to cheer on her team and is always ready to learn new skills. Furthermore, she was determined to land a jump and was able to after her 5th time off Big Red. After the season ended, she took over the leadership role of our PR Chair. She is a great addition to our team and I can’t wait to see her improve in all three events during the rest of her collegiate career!

I would like to nominate Samantha Varness from SIU. Sammy is a freshman who joined the team in the fall. She only knew how to wakeboard a little when she joined the team, but was our highest scoring female by the end of season (she also started trick skiing, because she realized wakeboarders are lame). However, her scores aren’t what’s the most important about her. It’s hard to find someone as dedicated as Sammy. She already has a position on the team as secretary, she volunteers her car for tournaments, she’s always at practice, and she has bought her own gear already. I believe she’ll help keep the club alive and bring a new energy to the team. She’s asked me a few times what she can do to help on projects and help the team progress, this kind of initiative isn’t common out of rookies and I appreciated it a lot. I’m confident leaving the team when there’s freshman like sammy to take over one day.

In her recent transfer to KU, Summer Hartzler has proven to be an indispensable asset to our team this season. Demonstrating her exceptional skills, she skied on the A team in all three events, contributing significantly to our impressive scores that secured our team’s spot to nationals. Beyond her athletic skills, Summer stands out as the embodiment of kindness and encouragement, consistently offering support to her teammates. Her willingness to go the extra mile and assist her peers reflects not only on her dedication but also on her positive impact to the team dynamics. I am truly grateful to have Summer as part of the KU team, her presence adding immeasurable value to our collective experience.

    Sydnie Lipski

Sydnie is a freshman on gvsu and joined never trying a slalom course before or riding on a trick ski. After only a few tries on the slalom course, she was already running it. She was a natural at trick and got an O the first time she tried it. It’s amazing how quickly she progressed with the limited time that she had on the course and just learning to trick during the season. She already loved to ski before she joined but we saw her love for the sport and dedication to the team grow throughout the season! She is going to be a very important skier for gv in the future!

    Ella Mccrumb from Michigan State
Ella joined our team as a freshman and has since gotten the ski bug. When she joined, she had only slalom skid but that would soon change the more she fell for the team. Her dedication to improving in all three events showed itself during the season by her landing her first jump and trying and succeeding in trick skiing. Its clear that she wants to project her new found passion for collegiate skiing and wants to see the sport grow as much as possible.

    Samantha Vanessa

Sammy is a freshman at SIU who joined the team this year. She had a little wakeboard experience, but instantly fell in love with skiing. She really improved throughout the year and even landed her first jump ever in a tournament. She was recently elected as secretary of the team and continues to help the team off the water. She recently bought new equipment for herself and will continue to get better at skiing!

I want to nominate Jake Artang (Tango!) for the MCWSA rookie of the year. I vividly remember the first time I got to ski with Jake, he was one of the only freshmen to sign up for a 7 am set, and when I asked him what he wanted to open at, I did a literal double take. I’m not sure what I was expecting, but 32 mph at 22 off wasn’t it. I then proceeded to pull him all the way up to 36 mph/28′ off, at which point I texted six different people “Y’ALL ARE NEVER GONNA BELIEVE THIS FRESHMAN!!!” Tango proved to be a phenomenal addition to our men’s slalom team, shooting straight to 5th round, which is impressive enough, but I think the thing that impressed me most about him was his attitude. Most freshmen in his position would catch a bit of an ego, and I don’t know if I would blame him if he had. However, Tango is always willing to give and take advice, and he’s one of our most encouraging members on the team. He is always down to talk shop about slalom with anyone, and he has such a genuine love for the sport. This summer he is set to become certified as a boat driver and work at Swerve Ski School, where he plans to keep pushing the boundaries of his slalom career, and become an absolute three-event legend. I believe that Wisconsin Waterski has a bright future ahead of it if Tango is any indicator of what’s to come.
