To get better at anything, it takes consistent practice. Trial and error. Failing and overcoming those failures. In water skiing, this is especially true – the number of times you have to fall on each new trick is often a serious barrier to an individual’s progress.

Who do you think was the most improved skier over the past season? It could be a team or an individual!

I’m definitely biased, but Akron has grown exponentially as a team over the past 3 years. 4 years ago,the team was just one skier competing and a couple of friends checking out tournaments for the first time. 3 years ago, the team managed to fill out a men’s slalom team and bring along a few girls. Then covid happened and our team was in danger of collapsing, but instead we exploded onto tournaments!

This past year we filled out full A teams for all three events for both Men and Women, and even had enough numbers to support having B team skiers! On the men’s side by the end of the season we had 6 people running slalom passes, 5 people with full trick runs (on wakeboards), and all five guys landing jumps! For girls we had one returning girl increase her PB to a couple at 32-15, a new girl who we taught to run the course, and some girls who had never skied before slaying mini course buoys! On trick, our almost entirely new team was able to put up 100pt runs consistently, and one new girl had PBs as high as 410pts! For jump, two girls were landing by the end of the season, and another two were “handle popping, gliding slowly into the water” close to landing! Akrons individual skiers were fantastic this season!

As a team, Akron placed really well in our tournaments! We took 4th place at one of our tournaments, and came up just short of making regionals. As a team that is losing one member in the fall, Akron is in great position to keep momentum going and make more of an impact on the tournaments next year!

    Anna prior – OSU

On top of continuing to build the empire that OSU is, Anna’s tourney scores skyrocketed this season. Watching her grow as a skier was on my favorite parts about being at Bennett’s this summer. Her dedication, discipline, and positivity with the sport models everything a great skier is. She woke up early some mornings to get an extra set in, always stayed positive on the water, and was hungry for scores! All her hard work showed throughout her season as she placed 3rd in slalom, jump, and over all at regionals!

    Xander “Xan Man” Bard- OSU

Xan has improved exponentially since the last season. He went from running slow speeds in slalom to now being able to touch 36 mph, and went from plopping to jumping mid 70s. Xander worked hard as a ski camp instructor this past summer, to both improve his coaching skills and personal skiing skills, and it paid off. Xander is a great team member, and I know he is going to continue improving even more!

    Claudia Matthews-OSU

Claudia joined our team back in 2019 with very little recreational waterskiing experience. She worked hard her freshman year to learn more about the sport, and she went to Bennett’s Ski School the following spring. That summer, Claudia put in countless hours on the water, working her way up to getting a hang of the course. This past year, in only the last three weeks of the season, Claudia not only ran her first pass, but ran the next three passes, getting into 28mph in that short amount of time! This made her a HUGE contributor to our team’s score. This accomplishment is a huge testament to all the hard work she has put in over these past few years.
